Composé à partir des éléments de aconitum lycoctonum (ou lycoctonon) « aconit tue-loup » (DIOSCORIDE, 4, 74 ds TLL s.v. aconitum, 419, 72 : aconitu altero quem licocto <n>on dicunt, nascitur...); pour aconitum, voir aconit; lycoctonum empr. au gr. « qui tue les loups » et en parlant d'une sorte d'aconit avec ell. de « aconit pour empoisonner les loups » (GALIEN, 13, 158 ds BAILLY) composé de « loup » et de « tuer »; suff. -ine caractéristique des alcaloïdes en chim. organique.
